Teresa String Arrangement by Bill Fulton
The Teresa string arrangement was created by Bill Fulton for saxophonist Ronnie Crumbly. Written by Ronnie Crumbly and Jim Ely, the piece was recorded for the Like Father, Like Son CD. Bill arranged the music and also wrote the string parts for the recording.

The arrangement combines saxophone, rhythm section and strings. This gave Bill the opportunity to add orchestral color without overwhelming the featured saxophone. The strings support the melody while adding warmth and movement to the track.
Bill Fulton performed keyboards on the recording in addition to serving as arranger. Ronnie Crumbly played saxophone. The rhythm section included Adam Cohen on bass, Jason Harnell on drums, Trey Balfour on percussion and David Scott on guitar. Ben Allard and Sharon Smith played violin, while Tracy Green performed the cello part.
Arranging Strings for a Rhythm Section
A string arrangement can add depth to a recording while still leaving space for the rhythm section and featured soloist. In Teresa, the violins and cello become part of the overall texture instead of simply sitting on top of the band.
This type of writing requires careful attention to register, dynamics and harmony. The string parts need to complement the saxophone as well as the keyboards, guitar, bass and percussion. As a result, every section has room to contribute to the sound of the arrangement.
The recording was completed in 2005 for Ronnie Crumbly’s Like Father, Like Son project. It is one example of Bill Fulton’s work arranging music for combinations of rhythm section, featured instruments and orchestral strings.
