Village Bayou by Bill Fulton & Ronnie Crumbly
Village Bayou is an original composition by Bill Fulton and saxophonist Ronnie Crumbly. Bill Fulton also created the arrangement and performed keyboards on the recording. The piece was recorded for Crumbly’s 2005 album Like Father, Like Son.
The arrangement combines a rhythm section with a colorful horn section. Ronnie Crumbly performs alto, tenor and baritone saxophone. Harry Kim plays trumpet, while David Stout plays trombone. The rhythm section features Bill Fulton on keyboards, Adam Cohen on bass, Jason Harnell on drums, Trey Balfour on percussion and Rick Relay on guitar.
Arranging Village Bayou
The Village Bayou arrangement gives the musicians plenty of room while still using the horns as an important part of the overall sound. Rather than treating the saxophones and brass as background decoration, the arrangement integrates them with the rhythm section. As a result, the ensemble has both the energy of a small group and the added color of a larger horn section.
Bill Fulton has worked extensively as an arranger, composer and keyboardist. His writing includes music for jazz ensembles, big bands, chamber groups, orchestras, recordings, television and film. You can explore more of his arranging and composing work on this website.
