I believe Tom Scott was also at this event as well as Horace Silver himself!OvertureMay 1997The American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers (ASMAC) held their regular luncheon on Wednesday, April 16, 1997 at the Ventura Club but they added a special feature. Arrangements of original or established works were submitted to the ASMAC Board in advance and four were chosen to be performed. A workshop for the fourโ€”Bill Fulton, Marlene Hadju, Ralph Kessler and Gernot Wolfgang โ€” began at 9:30am They had the opportunity to work with the legendary Les Brown and his Band of Renown for several hours. Following lunch, each composer conducted their arrangement before a packed house of celebrated arrangers, composers, musicians and friends. The workshop luncheon was coordinated by conductor/composer Woolf Phillips, Vice President of ASMAC.The joint workshop/luncheon was pronounced a major success by ASMAC President Larry Blank. Blank reported that ASMAC plans to do at least two a year and, if funding allows, perhaps more. ASMAC’s May 21st meeting will feature composer/arranger Billy May as a special guest speaker at the Ventura ClubGernot Wolfgang conducted his own composition and arrangement of “Everything.” Bill Fulton arranged a Horace Silver composition of “Preacher.” Marlene Hadju arranged and composed an original “On Nights Like This” and Ralph Kessler conducted his arrangement of Jerome Kern’s “Yesterday.” Arranger Jay Hill was on hand to hear Les Brown perform many of his arrangements for the Band.On hand were Professional Musicians, Local 47’s Vice President Hal Espinosa, Trustee Abe Most, Lyle (Spud) Murphy, composers and arrangers Van Alexander, Ernani Bernardi, Mauro Bruno, Ray Charles, Frank DeVol, Herschel Burke Gilbert, Joe Harnell, Neil Hefti, Mort Lindsey, Vic Schoen, George Wyle and over 100 others. For more information regarding the organization or future workshops. please contact ASMAC at (818) 994-4661.
