Q’d Up
Q’d Up for big band is a jazz arrangement created by Bill Fulton for Craig and Mary Durst of 2AZZ1. Released in 2015, the project transformed the piece into a full big band setting. It was also used for school clinics, where students could explore large-ensemble jazz performance.
Q’d Up for Big Band Arrangement
Writing for big band involves more than adding instruments to an existing piece. Each section needs a distinct musical role. Therefore, the saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and rhythm section must work together while maintaining clarity.
For this arrangement, Bill Fulton developed the music for the sound and scale of a full jazz ensemble. The expanded instrumentation provided room for contrasting textures, ensemble passages, and changes in intensity. At the same time, the chart retained the musical identity of the original piece.
The finished version was created for Craig and Mary Durst, who perform as 2AZZ1. Their recording, titled βQ’d Up (Big Band Version),β was released as a single in March 2015. You can hear the recording on Apple Music.
Designed for Performance and Education
The arrangement also served an educational purpose through school clinics. A professionally written big band chart gives student musicians an opportunity to study ensemble balance, articulation, dynamics, and rhythmic precision. In addition, rehearsing this type of music helps players understand how the individual sections support one another.
Clear orchestration is especially important in an educational setting. Brass passages must project without overwhelming the saxophones. Meanwhile, the rhythm section must establish a solid foundation for the entire ensemble. Careful attention to ranges and voicing also makes the music more effective in rehearsal and performance.
