The Cannon-Lechner Big Band featured 16 musicians from the Southern California jazz scene. Drummer Boyd Cannon and baritone saxophonist Paul Lechner led the group. The ensemble brought together experienced Los Angeles-area jazz musicians. Its repertoire showcased classic and contemporary big band writing.
Live at 66 California
The band recorded this performance on April 10, 1998, during an appearance at 66 California in Ventura. A contemporary LA Jazz Scene article described the club as a Ventura jazz stronghold. The article also reported a standing-room-only audience for the performance.
The album includes βApple Honey,β βI’ll Remember,β βBig Dipper,β βImpressionsβ and βGod Bless the Child.β Other selections include βMidnight Run,β βMy Romance,β βNight in Tunisiaβ and βGoin’ Away Blues.β Several prominent jazz writers contributed arrangements. They include Bill Holman, Bob Florence, Thad Jones, Mark Taylor, Sammy Nestico and Gary Persons.
Bill Fulton on Piano
Fulton played piano as a member of the Cannon-Lechner ensemble. The album’s detailed performance credits also name him on two selections. He plays on Bob Florence’s βI’ll Remember.β The credits also name him on Dizzy Gillespie and Frank Paparelli’s βNight in Tunisia.β
Curt Sletten, Robert Sack, Ron Barrows and Jack Coan made up the trumpet section. Scott Hughes, Larry Jones, Fred Crowther and Bill Fuentes played trombone. The saxophonists included Karolyn Kafer, Brad Carow, Gene Burkert, Matt Germaine and Paul Lechner. Jeff Faulkner played bass, while Boyd Cannon played drums.
A Southern California Big Band Recording
The live session documented an active period for large-ensemble jazz in Southern California. The original LA Jazz Scene article called the performance a milestone for Cannon-Lechner. The band recorded the performance for an upcoming CD release on JSC Records.
