For these three performances, the quintet features James Gentry on tenor saxophone, Jerry Rusch on trumpet, Bill Fulton on piano, Val Shaffer on bass, and John Caseabeer on drums. Together, the musicians perform a program combining established jazz compositions with original music by Gentry.
The opening track is Horace Silver’s “Nica’s Dream,” a 9:36 performance of one of Silver’s best-known compositions. The National Endowment for the Arts profile of Horace Silver recognizes “Nica’s Dream” among the compositions that became part of the jazz canon.
Fulton also performs on “Cliff-Hanger,” an original composition by James Gentry, and “Joy Spring,” the jazz standard composed by trumpeter Clifford Brown. These three tracks feature the same quintet personnel and represent Fulton’s contribution to the recording.

About James Gentry
Saxophonist James Gentry attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied with Joe Viola and John LaPorta. He also developed an interest in jazz composition and arranging. His studies in those areas included work with Herb Pomeroy, Paul Schmeling, and James Williams.
Gentry later lived and worked in Southern California, performing with musicians throughout the area’s jazz community. In addition to leading the quintet, Gentry produced Nica’s Dream.
