Bill Fulton Rhodes electric piano – “Whim of the Current”
Bill Fulton Fender Rhodes on Whim of the Current appears throughout drummer Paul Goldberg’s jazz and fusion recording. Fulton plays Fender Rhodes electric piano on seven of the album’s ten tracks. In addition, the recording features compositions by Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, John Patitucci, Michel Camilo, John Coltrane and Don Grolnick.
Bill Fulton on Fender Rhodes
Fulton plays Fender Rhodes on “The One Step,” “Black Nile,” “Eighty One,” “Humpty Dumpty,” “Mama,” “Cappuccino” and “Samba Song.” Together, these selections draw heavily from modern jazz and jazz fusion. As a result, the electric piano plays an important role in the sound of the ensemble.
Meanwhile, Paul Goldberg leads the project on drums and percussion. Derek Frank plays acoustic fretless bass on the tracks featuring Fulton. In addition, saxophonist Benny Golbin performs on several selections. These include “Black Nile,” “Eighty One,” “Mama,” “Cappuccino” and “Samba Song.”
For the remaining three tracks, Mike Hughes plays Fender Rhodes. Those selections are “Baja Bajo,” “Pra Voce” and “Pools.” Brent Fischer plays electric bass on the same three tracks. Therefore, the Fender Rhodes remains part of the album’s instrumental sound throughout the recording.
Music on Whim of the Current
Whim of the Current presents ten compositions associated with major jazz artists and composers. First, the program opens with Chick Corea’s “The One Step.” The album also includes Corea’s “Humpty Dumpty,” “Cappuccino” and “Samba Song.” In addition, listeners will hear Wayne Shorter’s “Black Nile,” Ron Carter’s “Eighty One,” John Coltrane’s “Mama” and Don Grolnick’s “Pools.”
Overall, the program centers on contemporary jazz, electric jazz and fusion. Moreover, the Fender Rhodes fits naturally into this repertoire. Its distinctive electric piano sound adds another dimension to the rhythm section and complements the album’s jazz-fusion material.
Recording and Personnel
Paul Goldberg produced the project and played drums and percussion. Mike Fennel co-produced and engineered the recording. The sessions took place at Universal Studios.
Along with Goldberg, the musicians include Bill Fulton on Fender Rhodes, Derek Frank on acoustic fretless bass and Benny Golbin on saxophones. Meanwhile, Mike Hughes performs Fender Rhodes on three tracks, with Brent Fischer on electric bass.
Finally, the liner notes acknowledge several of Goldberg’s drumming influences. They include Steve Gadd, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams and Vinnie Colaiuta. Charles Rapier created the cover artwork.
