Bill on Accordion for Downtown Downey Oktoberfest
Bill on accordion for Downtown Downey Oktoberfest was an unusual keyboard performance for me. I performed with bandleader and tuba player Ty Rust at the Downtown Downey Oktoberfest on September 16, 2023. Although the music called for accordion, an accordion player was not available. Therefore, I played all of the accordion parts on keyboard instead.
The performance was part of Downtown Downey’s Oktoberfest celebration, an outdoor community festival featuring live music, food, vendors, entertainment, and a beer garden. The event took place along Downey Avenue in the heart of Downtown Downey. As a result, the band performed for an audience that included both festival visitors and local residents enjoying the street celebration.
Performing the Accordion Parts on Keyboard
Covering accordion music on a keyboard requires more than simply choosing an accordion sound. The phrasing, articulation, dynamics, and character of the instrument all help make the part convincing. In this case, my job was to reproduce the musical role of the accordion while performing the parts from a keyboard.
Because Oktoberfest music has such a recognizable sound, the accordion-style parts were an important part of the band’s musical texture. The keyboard allowed me to provide those parts while still fitting naturally into the live ensemble. Meanwhile, Ty Rust served as bandleader and played tuba, helping give the group the traditional low-end character associated with this style of music.
Live Music at Downtown Downey Oktoberfest
The Downtown Downey Oktoberfest combined live entertainment with the atmosphere of a community street festival. According to The Downey Patriot, the 2023 festival featured dozens of vendors, food trucks, an outdoor beer garden, music, entertainment, and family activities.
Events like this are a different kind of musical experience from studio arranging, orchestration, or concert work. However, they draw on the same basic skills: listening, adapting quickly, supporting the ensemble, and finding the right sound for the music at hand.
