I have been trying to find information on the now defunct Mexican restaurant and music venue El Caballo for a awhile now. It was located at 70 Jack London SquareΒ Oakland, CA 94607. I played there several times in 1984 with a band called Stylus that included Dee Dee Crockett (vocal), Paul Cotruvo (guitar, vocal), Steve Coburn (bass, vocal), and Tom Fulton (drums, vocal). Dee Dee’s husband Greg Brown was responsible for booking the band at El Caballo as well as other venues.
An article from the Ukiah Daily Journal dated 10/19/88 has a quote from Robert Guitron who was the restaurant manager of El Caballo at the time.
However, El Caballo restaurant manager Robert Guitron said Monday that food business at his Jack London Square eatery was par for the course, but the bar was booming. “For some reason, people get more excited about beer and margaritas during the game than enchiladas,” he said. As of Monday night, it was still possible to get a hotel room in Oakland despite earlier warnings of room shortages.
Here is napkin saved from the restaurant:
